How to apply beard balm

Beard balm has a lot of amazing benefits for your beard. When you use it every day, you are able to treat dandruff, moisturize your skin, soften your beard and keep the hairs in place. However, to get the most out of your beard balm and ultimately, the best result, you need to know how to apply beard balm correctly. This guide shows you how to do that.

What is Beard Balm?

It is a leave-in conditioner you apply to your beard. It seals moisture in your beard, conditions and helps style your beard. The ingredients in most beard balms are naturally based and they help proper beard grooming while ensuring that you don’t suffer any negative side effects.

These ingredients generally include carrier oils, essential oils, butter and beeswax. Each of these ingredients plays a marvellous role in making beard balm a great choice for you. We break them down below:

  • Carrier oils

They provide the moisturizing and nourishing properties of beard balm. They help prevent or reduce the amount of flaking you might experience in your beard. They also reduce or get rid of itching, which keeps you comfortable throughout your day.

Another thing these amazing oils do for your beard is that they help soften it and reduce the rate at which the ends split. Examples of carrier oils are jojoba oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil.

  • Butter

They provide extra moisturization to your skin. This is great for you if you have a lot of flaking in your beard, or your skin gets dry quicker than most people. Butter works together with the carrier oil already in your balm, to ensure that your dry skin and flaky beard issues are a thing of the past.

  • Essential oils

They infuse a pretty great smell into the balm. The fragrance is such that it gives you that great manly scent you desire and it is not overly pungent too. Essential oils also act as natural anti-fungal and they help with increasing blood flow to your skin.

  • Beeswax

This is what gives your beard balm its styling ability. Its volume in most beard balms is quite light but enough to give you the styling ability you need to keep those stray whiskers in check throughout the day. It also plays a protective role for your skin, keeping it well-nourished all day. So, if you live in a dry, cold or windy climate, or you are intending to travel to such a place, you would do well to travel with a tin or two of beard balm.

So, when can you use beard balm?

  • When you need to tame stray whiskers
  • When you feel some tightness in your skin underneath your facial hair
  • When you have dandruff or flakiness in your beard
  • When you find yourself in dry, cold and/or windy climates

How to use beard balm

Before we answer this, let’s do a quick run-through of what you will need. You’ll definitely need some beard balm and a brush. We recommend that you get yourself a boar bristle brush if you don’t have one.

Boar bristle brushes are best for smoothing out beard hair and getting everything nice and wavy. Since the bristles don’t split, you won’t have any split ends in turn, making for a much healthier beard. So, let’s get into it. How to use a beard balm, play by play.

Step One: Clean your beard

It’s important to make sure that your beard is clean before applying the balm, for obvious reasons. The aim of conditioning is to build on the good you’ve already done through washing your beard. A dirty beard contains dead skin cells and othe impurities that might defeat the conditioning.

You should avoid using hair shampoo for your beard. Ensure you wash with beard-friendly shampoo and only 2-3 times a week.

Pro tip: If you feel you need to wash a lot more often, you can use warm water to wash every other day. This opens your pores and gives the conditioner more to work with.

Step Two: Rub A Small Amount Of Balm Into Your Hands

It only really makes sense to condition your beard after a wash. So if you’re washing only 2-3 times a week, you should aim to condition just as much.

Don’t overdo it though, a dime-sized amount is enough. Better yet, scoop out only enough to cover the tip of your finger then rub the balm between your fingers. This gets it all smoothed out and activated for use.

Step Three: Work The Balm Into Your Beard

Work it into your beard, starting from the roots and end at the tips of your hair. Ensure that you thoroughly cover all the hair in your neck, chin and your sideburns. The skin beneath your beard should not be left out. A beard is only as healthy as the skin from which it grows.

Pro tip: Make sure that you are not bending your fingers like a claw when applying the balm. Rather, keep your fingers flat and rub deeply. Using your fingertips and fingernails when rubbing the balm can damage your beard hair and cause split ends.

Step Four: Style Your Beard With A Comb Or A Boar Bristle Brush

Style your beard as desired. With the beard balm, you are sure that there will be no stray strands sticking out.

Pro tip: wooden combs are typically best for beard grooming as they are gentle on your beard hair and static-free.
